Not every email is for everyone. Customers shouldn’t get the “come and try us” offer; the people who came last week shouldn’t get the reminder to book. When you send a campaign, you pick exactly who it goes to.

The simple options

When you’re ready to send a campaign, the recipients box on its send settings page offers:

  • Contacts: pick people one by one, or tick All contacts for everyone with an email address.
  • Tags: everyone with a tag you’ve given them, such as newsletter or customer. Tags are added on the contact page.
  • Smart list: a saved filter of your contacts.
  • Pre-built segments and Build segments, below. Pick one and you’re done.

Mix and match with Build Segments

Choose Build Segments when one tag isn’t enough. You stack conditions and Kanamé works through them from top to bottom.

  1. Add your first condition. Each one is a Contact, Smart List, Tag or Pre-built Segment, then Is or Is Not, such as Tag is newsletter.
  2. Select Add more, then OR to add more people (tag is newsletter or tag is past customer), or AND to narrow (tag is newsletter and smart list is Winnipeg).
  3. To leave people out, add a condition like Tag is not unsubscribed offers at the bottom of the stack.
  4. The count, shown as (N contacts selected), updates as you go. Check it looks right, then select Review and Send. It opens a review before anything goes out.

Put the exclusions last: Conditions run in order. Build the group you want first, then add the “is not” lines at the bottom to remove people from it. An exclusion near the top can remove people before the later conditions add them back.

Two things to know

  • The list is worked out at the moment the email sends, not when you build it. Someone tagged this afternoon gets tonight’s email.
  • You can exclude by tag or by contact, but not by smart list. To leave out a whole group, give them a tag and exclude the tag.
